I said HEALTHIER Mac & Cheese!  BAM!!!  One of my favorite articles is Eating Well’s “How to Cut Calories at Thanksgiving Dinner!”  This article offers total makeovers of all of your holiday favorites, Turkey, stuffing, and even SWEET POTATO CASSEROLE!!!  The key is staying on track without feeling deprived! Dive into these articles and when you try they #CoachRobJCooks!!!

Reflections. Goals. Resolutions.

Chalk BoardHalloween is the “unofficial” gateway to caloric overload.
Treats. Sweets. Indulgences. Reflections. Goals. Resolutions.  All of these words are associated with the holiday season and the dawning of a New Year.  After all of the parties, quick meals while out shopping, and two straight months of “cheat days,” Americans are left to reflect on their unachieved goals from the past year and once again, set New Year’s resolutions.

Funny-new-years-resolutions-someecards-58b8d6273df78c353c22f120Have you ever stopped to think why only 8% of all New Year’s Resolutions are kept?  How difficult is it to stop 2 months of over indulgence when the clock strikes midnight on January 1st?  Why not start implementing small changes in November and December to set yourself up for success?  Huff Post has a great article from December of last year that offers tips on changes in the New Year.

21032703_1817881674890521_3711140115890992152_nFrom Coach Rob J – Steph is committed to being her best and this is how she and I went about transforming her body from a size 14 to a size 2 in just over a year.  It hasn’t always been easy; there have been tears, yelling, and a lot of pain to get her here.  We were and continue to be on a shared mission. Keep it up Killa! BAM!!!

It’s all about consistency and discipline. The motivation isn’t always there, so many days I force myself to workout, eat right, drink water, go to bed, etc…even if it’s not what I WANT to do that day.   I literally do not allow “excuses” in my life anymore.  Rob said something when I first began doing bootcamp and it has stuck with me for years, “don’t think, just move.”  I repeat this at least 5 times a day to remind myself to do what it takes.  The physical results are of course, fantastic!  Who doesn’t love to be able to wear whatever you want? 20841008_1810494048962617_7664280172392577460_nThe mental and emotional results are the real rewards.

To be able to pick up that heavy weight, go that extra 10 minutes, workout 5-7 times a week, that is mentally strengthening.  I LOVE waking up sore.  It’s a physical reminder that I put in the work, I gave my best, I did what I said I was going to do.  The best part of all of this, however, is when people tell me because of my example, they have started making changes in their own life.  THAT motivates me to lead by example every single day. 

20117044_1772344069444282_8322371101545401641_oI don’t consider the time I put into working out, or the food I no longer eat to be “sacrifices.”  Sacrifices are when you give up something valuable for something else.  I gave up things that did not bring value to my life.  Working out and eating healthy have added value to my life.  I don’t miss the old habits at all.  I don’t miss rewarding myself with food and alcohol.  I don’t miss dreading getting dressed for work every morning, I don’t miss feeling sluggish and tired.

20989046_1815588758453146_6440877220144770709_oFrom a size 14 to a 2 may just be numbers to most; for me, it has been a true transformation. Not just a physical one, but more importantly, a mental one.  I got rid of the baggage, and for the first time in my life, I am genuinely happy and strong.

Motivation Monday — THE ROCK

IMG_7481Over the next several weeks,  I am going to share some of my favorite sources of inspiration.  This week, I am giving a shout out to The Rock! If you haven’t checked out Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson for a little comic relief and a whole lot of motivation, you’re missing out on one of my favorites sources of inspiration.  Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Instagram Page.

I admire The Rock for so many reasons but especially his drive and commitment to his grind.  He is up at all hours of the night and day, working out and working on his career.  His relentless pursuit of success and development is not solely focused on his professional growth.  project-rock-rock-clock-3-600-92902He is also committed to help others achieve their goals and make their dreams come true by his charitable works and special projects.  His “Project Rock”  offers personal motivation for individuals “to help many people get after their goals as possible.”  Wake up and Grind with “The Rock Clock!”

The list of charities to which The Rock and his businesses donate includes Make-a-Wish and several charities supporting terminally-ill children, including his own The Dwayne Johnson Rock Foundation, he founded in 2006 which works with at-risk and terminally ill children.  Dwayne-JohnsonHe is also known to be an avid supporter of our troops and is involved with Boot Campaign, a charity focused on military appreciation.  Follow The Rock on Twitter!

11 Reasons to LOVE The ROCK!

IMG_7435I admit it, I am one of those gym-goers that walks around a little unsure of where I should start and in what order I should work out my muscle groups.  I have always been athletic, but I wouldn’t have considered myself strong.  I would walk in to the gym and feel like I was not maximizing my time spent in there.  Well, that is the person I USED to be. 

As a single mom, I was teaching at a charter school, always pressed for time, and looking to change up my fitness routine.  I bought 2 Groupons to try some new workout ideas.  The first Groupon was for Synergy Personal Training; they offered 2 weeks of unlimited bootcamp sessions and the second was for another bootcamp, which I also tried.  IMG_6611

Ready to try something different, I met Coach Rob for a consultation and decided to try different boot camps.  I tried both the 5:30am bootcamp and Rob’s 6:15am bootcamp; 2 1/2 years later, I am still going to his bootcamp 5 days a week.

I admit that I bounced around and tried everything from the complex to the simplest of programs and my favorite, by far, is Coach Rob’s bootcamp.  His focus on keeping his classes relevant, fresh, and concentrated on proper form, leave me exhausted in just 30 minutes.  Rob is constantly pushing us boot-campers to our limits with positive reinforcement and makes us feel like we are in a private sessions with him.  In the 2 1/2 years I have been at Synergy, there has not been one injury in our bootcamp.  I think our coach’s education and ability to lead a great workout is a key reason we have such a strong core group of bootcamp attendees.

IMG_7434Thank goodness I have never been one to watch the scale because I weigh 10 pounds more now than I did when I started.  By the BMI chart at my doctor’s office, I am considered over weight!  HA! I have only increased my endurance, feel that I can protect myself if necessary, and I am stronger than I have ever been!  The benefits of starting my weekdays in a positive and productive environment, with my fellow boot-campers pours over into every aspect of my life.  I am living and loving sharing my life with like-minded people!

 

BAM! Motivation Monday

Monday-MotivationDo you dread Mondays?  Do you sit at work on Mondays struggling to get in to the groove of a new work week?  For some, just getting out of bed on Monday is a struggle.  After a leisure weekend, working out before work, prepping your meals for the day, and making it to work on time, can make any Monday feel overwhelming.  I found this quick read, from the HuffPost, on why you should NEVER miss your Monday workout.

IMG_9105I also checked in with some of Coach Rob J’s Real Warriors to see how they maintain motivation and asked for some of their favorite resources to kickstart their drive, when they are feeling a little sluggish.  Chef B-rizzle, Bryan, isn’t one for social media or inspiring quotes; his motivation is fueled by results!  He said, “results become an addiction.”  From fitting into smaller sized clothing, the number on his scale decreasing, and consistently noticing improvements in his health, Chef B-rizzle is his own motivation.  I can personally attest that Bryan reigns himself back in and seeks guidance and motivation when he needs to refocus.  Check out his story – Chef B-Rizzle Gets Fit

Steph, aka #TeamKilla, has several resources of encouragement, and much like B-Rizzle, her own results fuel her fire.  Having transformed her body from a size 14 to a size 2 in just over a year, she gets a much needed boost from her before and after photos, inspirational quotes, Pinterest, Tumblr, and she follows a few male and female weightlifters and athletes on Instagram.  Check out some of the accounts #teamkilla shares: Gymaholic, HealthyFitMantras on IG, and Bossbabe.inc.  But between you and me, I think she gets her biggest boost of motivation when she shows up in new workout digs!  Check out how her transformation started, Team Killa.

Deb, aka #teamSunshine, gleans inspiration from all over, but says, “My BIGGEST motivations are Coach Rob’s page at 4:30am, #TeamKIlla and #FresnoFitChef’s instagram feeds, they are 2 crazy inspiring, positive women, and watching the successes of so many others on the web.”  Some of the accounts that she follows on Instagram are The Good Quote, GlennonDoyleMelton (author of “Love Warrior”), Better Things in Life, Kate.Cash.Fitness, and LvnFit.  IMG_5599In my opinion, Deb isn’t motivated by a number on the scale.  When she came to me, she said that she didn’t care what she weighed as long as I  could help her get to a healthier version of her old self.  Baby steps Sunshine, back to baby steps.  Check out when #teamSunshine started her baby steps.

Chef B-Rizzle Set #2 – Why a Trainer?

IMG_9105What made you decide to hire a personal trainer?
Since I have struggled with my weight most of my life, I have never been comfortable working out at public gyms.  Besides being self-conscious about working out in public,  I thought the personal attention of a trainer would help me to learn what I needed to change to be successful and build a healthier lifestyle.  The positive motivation, exercises, and nutrition coaching with Coach Rob are personally adapted for me.  Having a personal trainer has helped me to sustain long term progress, commitment to our plan, and it definitely helps knowing that I have an accountability partner!

At my heaviest my doctor told me I was over 100 pounds overweight and it clearly had a severe negative impact on my health. I had high blood pressure, vertigo, sleep apnea, and terrible migraine headaches.  Any one of these ailments would leave me debilitated anywhere from a few hours to several days. After trying multiple treatment plans, doctors, specialists, a briefcase full of medications, and seeking care at Stanford Medical Center, I realized I needed to invest in my health and completely overhaul my lifestyle. 

IMG_2543I was referred to Rob and after our first meeting, I knew he was a perfect fit! His calm, positive demeanor, and his ability to understand my apprehension about working out due to my health issues was key.  Approximately 5 years before I met Rob, I was successful in losing and maintaining a 90 pound weight loss, but as many of us do, I lost the weight the wrong way. Coach Rob took the time to explain a plan that would generate slow and steady progress.   The right way! 

IMG_5133To say my first day working out with Rob was a out of my comfort zone, is a total and complete understatement.   I was comfortable in the gym because I was the only one working out, but it had been so long since I worked out that I threw up at the end of my work out. Somehow, Rob put a positive spin on me puking my guts out and I have been showing up ever since!

So here we are… Mid January, and by now you have probably been inundated by many weight loss gimmicks and diet ads. Did any catch your attention? Which one did you order or buy? Or are you still waiting for something better?? Don’t wait for some “AD” to inspire you, get started now!!! I encounter clients everyday that regret not getting fit/ healthier sooner. It will never be too late, but it will get harder… Every moment you put off you are just adding to your uphill battle- Don’t do that and Start Today!

You want to be better, feel better, and live better, but you keep allowing “other stuff” to get in your way. You don’t feel well and you probably have a combination of the following symptoms:

1. mild depression or a depressed like state

2. low energy and lethargic. no mental clarity

3. not comfortable in your own skin

4. low sex drive. low vitality

5. apathetic

6. sick and always sick

7. party pooper. can’t stay up late with family because too tired

8. achey and just sore

9. trouble moving around, getting in/out of chairs

Lets do something right now… Pick up the phone and call someone! Tell that person you need help and you want to be better. Be Honest and ask that person to help you be accountable to a better way of living. Tell that person why you want to be better and ask them if they would walk that journey with you. For those of you not fortunate to have someone like that, you can call me. This is my mission field! This is the work that God has called me to do. I would love the opportunity to work with you (or at least help you get started). It’s really not that hard, but it will take a huge commitment on your part.

The decision is yours… if you have the opportunity to be better- why not take it?

I’m not advocating that fitness is the “all and be all” (because it’s not), but what I am saying is that if your current lifestyle is void of “fitness and health”, then you are missing a huge opportunity. You see… fitness can improve overall physical function; and being better able to function means being more capable of participating in the things that are important to you (with less overall stress): Family, Work, Ministry, Service, etc. Maybe “fitness” and the pursuit thereof can be a means to an end…!?! Maybe there are things you want to do but can’t because you lack the physical ability. Maybe its time that you begin to view fitness and its benefits in a new light. There is nothing that you can do without your body… it (your body) will either enable or limit you! I suggest you position yourself to accomplish the former.

Fitness is fairly simple, but its getting started that’s the hard part. If you are in a place where you want to get started but are having trouble, call that friend or call me. We will help by way of listening, holding you accountable, and telling you that- “YOU CAN DO THIS”.

How to form positive habits and a NEW YOU!

Ever wonder why some people get great results from their workouts or their normal eating routine? What makes them different? How do they do it? Usually it’s 1 or 2 simple habits.

All of us face two choices in life and it usually pertains to what we control and what we don’t. Sometimes in life, we have challenges beyond our control, yet we allow the challenges to influence the things we do have control over. When it comes to regular workouts and healthful eating, many people feel they have barriers, which prevent them from regular workouts. These can be work, schedule, the need for more time with family, long commutes, and even boredom and fatigue. Some can’t be helped at all: personal injuries or illness, caring for elderly patients, feeding the teenagers each evening and there are many more. But barriers should not stop you from implementing positive changes to secure a long and healthy life.

What is a ‘fence sitter’? That is a person who only puts their foot halfway in the water, or half way to a commitment. Well, 2015 is now here and its time to make some positive changes to your lifestyle.

You can surely find 1-2 things that YOU DO CONTROL and attack those. Make them positive habits that you always think about. Then pick two more! Before you know it you are on your way to a new you.

I knew a nurse who said that her challenge was eating cake at work. With 40 fellow staff members, seldom did a week go by without a cake or party celebrating a birthday, wedding anniversary or birth. What did she do? She found a few charities that the staff could get behind and at every party they decided to donate $1 in that person’s name instead of buying and eating cake. At the end of the year they had over $1000 for charity and celebrated an end to eating cake!

It’s hard to change your diet overnight, but you can form one or two new habits every month and change your life. Try these tips: ½ a sandwich instead of a whole at lunch. Swear off fried foods. No soda. One piece of fruit per day. Cut-back or eliminate the alcoholic drinks.

Maybe you can’t workout every day, but an easy way to start is to find a buddy or co-worker and walk together at lunch. Then make sure you go out every day. If the weather’s bad – look for an indoor mall or other enclosed facility. After you’re in the habit of going 5 days a week, carve out some time each Saturday when you take a walk. Select a time of day (maybe first thing in the morning) when you don’t have conflicts or distractions and you know you can always get it done. Before you know it you’ll be out walking 6 days a week. Then, find that special time for walking on Sunday.

There are indeed things that you can control in life that will make you healthier and ultimately happier. Start with only 1-2 things that you can control and then go to work on them. You’ll soon see your world change!
